A late goal ensured the Wellmen beat Buckley Town 2-1 at the Achieve More Training Stadium despite playing an hour with 10 men

The Wellmen were back at the Achieve More Training Stadium for this Bank Holiday Monday clash against our Flintshire neighbours Buckley Town.

Holywell Town had the best of the opening few minutes, having plenty of possession but no clear chances on the Buckley Town goal. Town’s first chance came on 9 minutes, a corner from the left found Danny Sullivan but his header was cleared off the line for a corner. From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Zebb Edwards but his shot was blocked and cleared to safety.

The opening goal came with 15 minutes on the clock. Town won a free kick on the edge of the box, and Danny Andrews lofted a ball towards the far post and Danny Sullivan was there to head home, scoring his second goal in as many games to give Town the lead.

Buckley’s first real chance fell on 23 minutes. Morgan Murray was unlucky to concede a free kick for handball and from the free kick, Patrick Hinchcliffe’s effort went inches over Keighan Jones’ crossbar. Moments later, the Wellmen were reduced to 10 men, Danny Andrews seeing red for a challenge on Rueben Teixeira. The visitors then levelled as Dylan Roberts shot took a wicked deflection which Keighan Jones couldn't get to and it fell into the net.

Town were left frustrated a few minutes later, Aled Bellis pushed Kai Wallis over in an off the ball incident which neither of the officials saw. A few minutes later, Town were awarded a penalty after Wallis was brought down. Dave Forbes stepped up to take the kick but it was saved by Jack Edwards.

The visitors had a couple of chances before half time but Asa Hamilton’s effort was well over the crossbar when in a good position, then Aled Bellis header hit the side netting.

The second half started well for Town, Morgan Murray went on a good run, he beat the challenge by Dylan Roberts, but Morgan’s shot was saved by Jack Edwards.
Buckley had an attempt, Asa Hamilton burst through but he was put under pressure by Dave Hayes and Hamilton's shot was poor and Jones was able to save easily.

Forbes went close for Town, then Zebb Edwards' long range effort flew wide of the post. Buckley then had a chance, a good run by Hinchcliffe but his cross come shot beat everyone but flew out for a goal kick.

Ilan ap Gareth came on for Kai Wallis with 72 minutes played, and he nearly made an instant impact, a good ball in by Bibby saw Ilan Ap Gareth chase but he was unable to get the decisive touch to turn the ball past the oncoming Jack Edwards. Next effort came to Buckley as sub David Amorin found himself in a good position, but his shot on the turn went well wide of Keighan Jones’ post.

As the game entered the final few minutes, the Wellmen took the lead. A good move saw the ball come across goal and Zebb Edwards’ shot was blocked, the ball rebound towards Dave Hayes who calmly fired the ball into the bottom corner, a great finish and the supporters behind the goal went wild.

Buckley looked to grab an injury time equaliser but the Wellmen held firm to claim their 6th point out of 6 over the bank holiday weekend, a result which saw them move up to 5th in the JD Cymru North table.

A great result, and weekend, for the Wellmen and many thanks to the official attendance of 428 who was at today’s game for their support.
