The Wellmen fell to a heavy 8-3 defeat this evening at League Leaders Airbus UK Broughton

The Wellmen travelled to League Leaders Airbus UK Broughton looking to put last week’s disappointing Welsh Cup exit behind them.
It was a disastrous start for Town as they conceded another early goal as Jordan Evans found Nathan Williams and his header nesteled into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead. The Wellmen didn’t have time to settle then they found themselves further behind with just 11 minutes played as George Peers fired low in to the bottom corner. Things got terribly worse for Town 2 minutes later as Airbus scored again to increase their lead, as Danny Warren found space at the far post to head past Shaun Pearson.
The home side were in complete control and had another good chance with 20 minutes on the clock, Danny Warren picked up the ball and burst forward but dragged his shot across the face of goal and past Shaun Pearson’s left hand post. The Wellmen had their first chance of the game with 31 minutes played as Jamie Breese did well down the left, his cross found Jake Cooke but his shot from the edge of the box was saved by Keighan Jones. The Wellmen were growing in confidence and Mark Winslade did well bursting forward, his cross is blocked and the ball is deflected to Jake Cooke, he controls well and is about to shoot when he is brought down but referee John Jones waved away Town’s penalty appeals.
A few minutes later, Town had pulled one back. Danny Andrews delivered a great ball into the crowded box, a few players went up for it, Jones in the Airbus goal missed it and the ball hit Sullivan who did enough to see the ball cross the line. With a minute of normal time to play in the first half, Breese did well and from the edge of the box, he turns and shoots but his effort goes agonisingly wide of Jones’ left hand post. With the game in injury time at the end of the first half, the home side scored a 4th goal, a goal bound effort was blocked on the line, and as the Airbus players waved their arms claiming it had, the ball fell to the unmarked George Peers on the edge of the box who fired the ball low into the net in what turned out the be the last kick of the half.
The players came back out hoping to grab an early goal to get back into the game but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as Airbus grabbed their 5th goal of the evening as George Peers completed his hat trick. Moments later, Town have half a chance, as Sullivan saw his header blocked then Ryan Edwards’ effort was saved by Jones. With nearly an hour on the clock, Jamie Davies increases’ Airbus’ lead. His initial shot was spilled by Pearson and Davies slotted home the looseball.
A couple of minutes later, Town had pulled one back, Morgan Murray with a great ball through to Breese who slots the ball home, then Winslade grabs another, heading home from Ryan Edwards’ excellent cross. The Wellmen were back in it. Moments later however, the Wellmen were reduced to 10 men as Mike Pearson saw red for a foul in the box. George Peers stepped up to take the spot kick and he fired high over Pearson’s bar, that was a let off for Town who then went up the other end and themselves won a penalty after Winslade had been bundled over in the box. Jamie Breese stepped up but his kick was saved well by Jones who dived the right way and blocked the ball with his left hand.
With the Wellmen pressing forward looking for another goal, Airbus themselves were also looking to add to their tally, and they did with 75 minutes played. A good move down the right saw a good ball across the face of goal to Peers who was left unmarked and tapped the ball home. Airbus then fired in their 8th with a minute to go, breaking on the counter attack, Jamie Davies slots the ball past Pearson. The Wellmen kept pressing and Beau Cornish had a header saved well by Jones with a minute remaining of the half which turned out to be Town’s last chance of the game.
It was a terrible night in the office for the Wellmen and must now bounce back next week in the home game against Ruthin Town.
