The Wellmen lined up against Cefn Albion in the battle of the top two in the eagerly awaited match of the day in the Welsh National League Premier Division.
The first chance of the game falling to the Wellmen, a free kick into the box found Jacob Wise, his header was going towards the bottom corner of the goal but Cefn goalkeeper Joshua Roberts was down well to gather at the foot of the post. Tony Roebuck, on his return from suspension, soon settled in the centre of midfield and won a free kick after a heavy challenge, the free kick was lifted into the box but was a little too high for Jacob Wise to connect with.
Cefn Albion got into the game and created a couple of chances, but Mike Platt was out early and put the striker off and the ball ran out for a goal kick, then minutes later a run into the box by Cefn’s Alex Williams, he thought he was brought down by Platt and claimed he should have had a penalty but the linesman’s flag was raised as he was in an offside position.
Town were finding it hard to create chances, Mark Connolly did on a couple of occasions feed the ball through but Sam Jones was caught off side and the chance had gone. Town were grateful to Mike Platt in the final five minutes of the half, a chance by Dion Gibbins saw the ball fly towards Platt’s goal and he was forced to punch the ball over the bar for a corner, which came to nothing.
The sides went off at half time, the game still goalless but the visitors having the majority of the play and Town will have to get into the game ore in the second half.
The second half got underway and Cefn’s Jordan Williams had a snap shot which went wide. Then Josh Millington went close but his cheeky lob fell the wrong side of the post. Town looked to get the opening goal but it wasn’t happening, and everything the Wellmen threw at Albion, they dealt with the threat and frustrated the lads. Dylan Allshorn burst free down the left and his dangerous low cross was only inches away from being tapped in by Mark Connolly. The opening goal came in the 71st minute and it went the way of the Visitors. A through ball by the Cefn Midfielder found Alex Williams, who springed the offside trap and was one on one situation with the onrushing Mike Platt, he slotted the ball past Platt to give the visitors the lead.
Town nearly grabbed a quick equaliser, Cooke’s low cross from the right just needed a touch to steer the ball home but it was a little too fast for Mark Connolly and Mark Winslade. As the game entered the final 5 minutes, Town went close again, this time Allshorn forced their keeper to pull off a great save, as he dived to his left and palmed the ball out for a corner for what turned out to be Town’s last chance. The referee blew for full time and the Wellmen had lost their first league game of the season.
The Wellmen will look to get back to winning ways with victory next week away to Llay Welfare in the Quarter Final of the League Cup.
