The Wellmen travelled down the coast to face Colwyn Bay in the JD Cymru North.
Fresh from Saturday’s emphatic 5-0 win over Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant, Town travelled to Colwyn Bay’s Four Crosses Construction Arena full of confidence and looking to end The Seagull’s Manager Steve Evans unbeaten run since he took over the reigns of the seaside club.
The game started brightly and with only a minute or so on the clock, Ryan Neild was forced to punch clear a good cross into the box by Danny Andrews, then an early burst of pace down the wing by Dylan Allshorn saw him beat the challenges of a couple of defender, he twist and turned and got into the box but his shot was saved well by Neild. Moments later, Keighan Jones was down well to save a Ryan Edwards effort. A few minutes later, Colwyn Bay thought they had taken the lead when Thomas McCready’s shot hit the cross bar and dropped down and back into play but the referee and his assistant waved play on as the ball hadn’t crossed the line.
It was end to end stuff and a great advertisement for the league when Holywell nearly broke the deadlock. A cheeky free kick into the box evaded everyone, and Neild was forced to stretch low and palm the ball away for a corner. The corner came to nothing and the next attack saw Zebb Edwards having to slide to block a Ryan Edwards shot, then with half hour played, the Wellmen took the lead.
Dylan Allshorn was looking dangerous down the flank, and a great move saw him pick up the ball, he ran forward, beat his marker and his low cross from the byline found Ilan ap Gareth who tapped the ball home to give Town a deserved lead. The home side should have scored an instant equaliser, they burst forward and the ball was passed to Edwards but his shot was saved by Jones. Then moments later, a goal mouth scramble in the Holywell Town penalty area saw the ball fall to Kieren Evans, but his effort whizzed past Jones’ right hand post. With the half coming to a close, Bay were grateful for goalkeeper Neild again as he got down well to save another Allshorn effort on goal before the referee blew for the half time interval.
The sides came out in the second half and James Kirby burst forward but a brilliant tackle by Dave Hayes prevented him from getting his shot off, then Jones made a couple of great saves in quick succession, first saving well from Kirby, then from that save, Jones darted across his goal area to block Edwards’ effort who had picked up the rebound, which was on target and heading for the net.
Town still had chances and Allshorn was still finding space on the left, he cut inside and burst forward towards goal and fired low and hard but the keeper was on hand at his near post to save well. Town then won a couple of corners which were dealt with by the Bay defenders before Town were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Andrews stepped up to take and his cross was heading for the far corner of the goal until Neild reached out to palm the ball away for a corner. From the resulting corner, Town doubled their lead. The ball broke in the box and a goal mouth scramble saw the ball fall to Danny Sullivan, who’s effort flew into the top of the net to give Town a 2 goal cushion with only a couple of minutes still to play. The Wellmen supporters were cheering on the lads, and with the game deep into injury time, Dave Forbes gave them even more reason to celebrate. A high ball into the box saw Neild make a blunder and he was unable to hold onto the ball and it fell to the floor into the path of Forbes, who controlled and tapped the ball home before running over towards to home supporters to celebrate wrapping up all three points for the Wellmen.
The game played out for a couple of added minutes but the referee soon blew and it was an excellent performance and victory for the Wellmen, and the result lifts the side to 5th in the JD Cymru League North. A great crowd of over 650 was there to see it too.
Great victory and well done to all.
