Wellmen lose in derby against Flint Mountain.

The Wellmen fell to a 2-1 defeat against Flint Mountain in the local derby match at the Bartons North Wales Stadium.

The game got underway and the Wellmen had a dream start by taking the lead with 3 minutes on the clock. Winning a free kick by the dug out, Danny Sullivan whipped in a great ball, Gareth Evans controlled then fed the ball through to Danny Andrews and the captain made no mistake and fired the Wellmen into the lead.
The game then settled down, the Wellmen with a couple of good balls into the box but the keeper dealt with easily, then Flint Mountain had a good spell of play and the best move saw the ball over the top for Rob Hughes to chase but he was flagged as offside before he could get his shot away.
The visitors drew level with 16 minutes on the clock. A good move saw the ball through for Rob Hughes to chase, he gets into the box and going away from goal and is brought down by Ryan Woods and the referee points to the penalty spot. Hughes gets up and fired low into the bottom corner beating Woods dive to his left.
The game then settled down with both sides having equal amount of possession, but both sides unable to test the opponent’s keeper. The visitors did have a chance with 25 minutes played, free kick in from the left found Andy Brown but his header flashed wide of Woods’ post. Jake Cooke went close with 33 minutes on the clock, a great ball in by Bardu McGilloway found Cooke but his diving header came flying back off the post and cleared.
With 38 minutes on the clock, the visitors took the lead. Jack Sconce threaded the ball through to Mike Hayes who smashed the ball home past Woods.
The Wellmen went in behind at the break and knew they had it all to do in the second half.
The second half got underway and the Wellmen’s caused was helped in the 48t minute as Flint Mountain were reduced to 10 men. Aaaron Simpson saw red after a challenge on Jamie Breese. Moments later, Breese was brought down in the box but the referee waved away the players shouts for a penalty. The Wellmen pressed for the equaliser but were unable to test Danby, but the opponents keeper was called into action on 66 minutes, good work by Danny Sullivan and his ball found Breese, who smashed in a fierce drive which the keeper pulled off a great point blank save to prevent he equaliser.
Substitute Mark Winslade went close on 74 minutes, Morgan Murray with a good ball in but Winslades header goes wide, then Danny Sullivan tried his luck from distance and wasn’t too far away. As the game went into the final 10 minutes, Cooke went close but his effort was only inches too high then deep into injury time, Winslades header wrong foots the keeper but unfortunately fell inches wide of the post.
The referee blew for full time and it wasn’t to be for the Wellmen today and all eyes now are focused on next week’s Welsh Cup game against Ruthin Town.
