The Wellmen got the game underway and straight away put the pressure on the visitor’s goal. With four minutes played, Town break the deadlock, a great run down the left by Kieron Price and his cross is too high for the on running Sam Jones, but Jake Cooke picks it up, he lays the ball off into the box, Luke Edwards leaves it to Mark Connolly, his shot is blocked by the New Brighton defender, but it falls to Shaun Tuck who fires home at the near post. Great start to the game for the Wellmen.
Town pressed for the second goal, Kieron Price was causing all sorts of problems down the left for the home side, and his cross found Mark Connolly but his header was gathered by Rhys Peers. A few minutes later, another good cross by Price found Jake Cooke, but his fierce drive came back off the post. A few minutes later however, Town had grabbed their 2nd goal of the afternoon, Shaun Tuck’s shot was only parried by the keeper and the ball fell to mark Connolly who poked the ball into an empty net.
It wasn’t long before Town got the third goal of the afternoon. James Graham’s free kick into the box found Jacob Wise, and the tall defender’s header found Sam Jones who fired the ball home. A couple of minutes later it was 4-0. Another great cross into the box saw the keeper come out to gather the ball, but he was unable to keep hold of it and Luke Edwards was there to force the loose ball home.
New Brighton’s first real effort came on 25 minutes, good play down their right saw the ball fall to Matthew Robinson, he controlled and lined up the shot but was blocked by Jacob Wise, and the follow up saw Robinson get a head to the ball but it was safetly gatherd by Mike Platt. Town go close to increasing their lead, best chance falling to Shaun Tuck who bursts through, he rounds the keeper but his effort from a tight angle hits the side netting. The sides go in at the break with the Wellmen leading 5-0.
Town came out for the second half and had the first chance of the half, Jake Cooke cross and the ball finds Mark Connolly but his header his deflected out for a corner by the New Brighton Villa defender. A few minutes later, the visitors create a chance, James Beck bursts forward from midfield, skipping past a couple of challenges but his shot goes over the bar. Town increased their lead on 55 minutes as Shaun Tuck grabs his hat trick, firing home past Rhys Peers. Shaun Tuck had an overhead effort go inches over the bar before the visitors pulled one back a minute later, James Beck picking up the ball and his curling shot beats Mike Platt and nestles in the top corner.
Town restored their 6 goal cushion almost immediately, as Jake Cooke fires home from outside the area. A couple of minutes later, the visitors pull another goal back. They won a free kick on the edge of the area, and the cross finds Max Quinn at the far post who taps the ball home. Town still looked to increase their lead, with Sam Jones blasting over when through on goal, and Mike Platt was alert to be down early to gather the ball at Matthew Robinson’s feet.
Town substitute Josh Robertson rounded off the scoring, firing home a few minutes after coming on as sub. Town nearly added to their tally late in the game, with Jacob Wise seeing his header saved well by the New Brighton Villa keeper and Mark Connolly’s glancing header was only inches wide of the post, but the referee blew shortly afterwards to end the game and it was the Wellmen’s name who was still in the hat for Monday’s draw.
