Wellmen out of WBS League Cup after defeat at Penrhyncoch

Steve Roberts2 Feb - 21:00

The Wellmen are out of the WBS League Cup after a 5-1 loss at Penrhyncoch.

The game was pretty evenly matched for the opening minutes, and the Wellmen's first chance fell to Jamie Breese, good play by Ryan Edwards and Morgan Murray saw the ball played to Breese, but his shot was blocked in the penalty area. Moments later Jake Cooke went close, but saw the keeper Leigh Jenkins save his overhead kick.

Cooke went close again midway through the half, Danny Andrews passing to Cooke but his shot went inches wide.

The home side took the lead in the 43rd minute, a corner from the left found Keiron Booker at the far post and he headed home. Things got worse for the Wellmen in the 6th minute of injury time as Penrhyncoch doubled their lead through Daniel Owen, whos shot took a deflection and looped over keeper Kieron Feenan.

The second half got underway and the home side added a third with a couple of minutes played, as Ifan Burrel got on the scoresheet. A slip by Feenan saw the ball fall to the penrhyncoch player, Feenan saved his shot but the loose ball fell to Burrell who fired home.

The Wellmen won a penalty on 49 minutes and Jamie Breese stepped up and fired home to pull a goal back for the Wellmen. Town looked to build on the goal but were unable to break down the home side's defence.

Any hope of a comeback were dashed on 67 minutes as Harri Horwood's free kick from the edge of the box found the back of the net. Penrhyncoch wrapped up the scoring in injuury time as Ifan Burrell grabbed his second of the game to wrap up a disappointing afternoon for John Haseldin's side.
