The Wellmen welcomed mid Wales Outfit Penrhyncoch to Holywell and the Wellmen ran out 2-1 winners courtesy of Jake Cooke’s 92nd minute winner
The Wellmen flew out of the blocks and with a couple of minutes on the clock, Danny Andrews forced Leigh Jenkins into making an early save, then Jamie Breese is put through on goal but his shot across goal rolled inches wide of the far post. The visitors first chance of the afternoon came on 7 minutes, the ball is put over the top for Ifan Burrell to chase but Shaun Pearson is out early and clears the ball before Burrell could get a chance on goal.
The next chance fell to Town’s Macauley Taylor, his shot saved well by Jenkins, then moments later Town win a free kick in a dangerous position, but Danny Andrews free kick takes a deflection for a corner which comes to nothing. It had been a great start but Town were unable to break the deadlock.
Penrhyncoch had a good spell of pressure midway through the half but like the Wellmen, were unable to turn possession into goals, and despite plenty of the play, they were unable to test Pearson. The Wellmen withstood the pressure and with 10 minutes left of the half, had half a chance as a Danny Andrews corner to the far post found Jake Cooke but he was unable to get his header on target. With 5 minutes to go, Penrhyncoch won a free kick in a dangerous position but Harri Horwoods free kick slams against the wall and the attacker who followed up was unable to control the ball and it went out for a goal kick.
The deadlock was finally broken with a couple of minutes left in the first half, and it was top scorer Jamie Breese who found himself on the scoresheet. Danny Andrews delivered a dangerous ball into the box and Breese is there and a challenge, he gets the last touch and steer’s the ball into the net. The lead was no more than Town deserved and at the interval, it was this goal which separated both sides.
The sides came out for the second half and the Roosters very nearly grabbed an immediate equaliser, a low ball across the face of the goal and Ifan Burrell at the far post was only a few inches away from getting the decisive touch which would have seen the ball end up in the back of the net. The next ten minutes or so was pretty evenly matched with neither side able to test the opposing keeper. With an hour played, Holwyell Town had a chance as Myles Hart did well in the middle of the park, played a brilliant ball to Mark Winslade but his shot was saved by Jenkins, then Breese broke free and beared down on goal but the Penrhyncoch defender did well to block his shot.
Disaster struck for the Wellmen with 76 minutes played as Penrhyncoch drew level. They broke down the right and a low ball across the box found Geoff Kellaway who was in space at the far post and he tapped the ball home into an empty goal. This equaliser hit the Wellmen who tried to get another goal to regain the lead. Ryan Edwards had a free kick go over the bar the a great cross into the box gets a flick on towards the far post and the ball was just a little too fast for the onrushing Jake Cooke who would have had a simple header if he managed to get a touch to the ball.
As the game went into injury time, it looked like Town would have had to settle for a point but Jake Cooke had other ideas. A good move saw the ball go out to Jamie Breese on the left, he cntrols and sends over a great ball to the far post, the ball takes a slight deflection and Jake Cooke is there to head the ball home before rushing to celebrate with the supporters behind the goal.
Cooke’s late winner turned out to be the final chance of the game and the Wellmen picked up another three points to keep the pressure on Airbus UK Broughton and Colwyn Bay who currently sat above them in the JD Cymru League North. The Wellmen next travel to Denbigh Town on Friday and they will be looking to keep their winning run going.
