Wellmen stumble to derby defeat

Wellmen stumble to derby defeat

Steve Roberts21 Sep 2018 - 23:36

The Wellmen fell to a 3-1 defeat to near neighbours Denbigh Town at Halkyn Road this evening.

A tight opening exchange saw both sides trying to get control of the game, and the balance of the play was in the Denbigh Town half, but Town couldn't turn possession into goals. Both sides created half chances but neither side could test the opposition's keeper and with a minute of the half remaining, the visitors took the lead as former Town player Sam Jones broke free down the left, and got into the box and his low cross was met by the onrushing Mark Roberts to side foot home. The late goal was harsh on the Wellmen, and as the referee blew for the half time interval, both sides knew the second half would be different.

The half started with Town looking for an equaliser, and with around 10 miunes of the half played, the Wellmen got their deserved equaliser. A Denbigh Town player was adjudged to have handled the ball and the referee didn't hesitate to point to the penalty spot and Sam JOnes converted firing the ball past Denbigh keeper Craig Vernon.

The goal lifted Town and we looked for a goal to take the lead. The next move saw the ball fly into the box from the right and Connor Littler got up well to beat his marker but his header also beat the post and went out for a goal kick. The visitors then took the lead through Roberts with his second goal of the night, converting home from the loose ball with a few minutes remaining.

The Wellmen very nearly equalised when Littler's header found the underside of the cross bar, and with the Wellmen players pleading with the ref that it had crossed the line, Denbigh broke clear and in a 3 on 1 situation, the ball then broke for Alfonso Fosu-Mensah who found himself through on goal and slotted past Andy Metcalf to make it 3-1 to the visitors, and that's how it stayed until the end of the match.

Disappointing evening for the Wellmen and all eyes now turn to Tuesday and the visit of Gresford Athletic to Halkyn Road. (Kick off 7.30pm)
