Wellmen through to Semi Final of NEWFA Challenge Cup

Steve Roberts1 Apr - 23:03

Wellmen through to the semi final of the NEWFA Challenge Cup after a 4-1 victory over Ruthin Town.

The Wellmen looked to make amends for Saturday’s performance at Guilsfiled and were fast out of the blocks looking for the early goal. With 10 minutes on the clock, great play by Brady McGilloway saw him twist and turn around his marker, then unleashed a great shot on goal which the keeper Daniel Goldston did well to save for a corner, then two minutes later, Goldston did well again, diving low to his right to save Jake Cooke’s goalbound effort.
The opening goal came on 18 minutes, the Wellmen won a corner and Brady McGilloway’s cross found the head of Danny Sullivan who headed Town into the lead. With half hour on the clock, Jamie Breese did well under the challenge of a Ruthin to get his shot away but his shot flashed across goal and wide of the post. With 37 minutes on the clock, The Wellmen doubled their lead through Jake Roberts, as he controlled the ball outside the box and fired home into the bottom corner past the stretched dive of Goldston.
With 5 minutes of the half remaining, the home side went close as Llyr Morris’ flashed a header inches wide, then on the stroke of half time, the home side pulled one back as Matty Williams effort found he net through a crowded penalty area.
The second half began and the Wellmen continued to play great football and on 54 minutes, the first real chance of the half fell to the Wellmen, a great ball through for Breese to chase, he stayed on side and as he ran goalwards, his shot past the advancing keeper went inches wide. Then moments later, the keeper did well to save Jake Cooke’s header after he dived low and saved on the line. After missing the target with his last effort, Breese made amends for that and grabbed Town’s 3rd with 57 minutes played. McGilloway with the through ball for him to chase and his time he fired past Goldston to make it 3-1.
With 77 minutes on the clock, Town grabbed their 4th of the evening through Danny Andrews. The Wellmen won a free kick in a dangerous position outside of the area. Andrews stepped up to take the free kick and his curling effort found the top corner giving the keeper no chance. As the game entered injury time, Luca Hogan made a dangerous run into the box but his shot was blocked, then Andrews tried a cheeky Chip over the keeper but he was able to get back to tip the ball over his crossbar in what turned out to be the final action of the game.
It was the Wellmen’s best performance of recent weeks and the supporters who made the long trip to Bala were happy with the performance and result. The Wellmen now face Mold Alex in the semi final and the match will be played on Tuesday 15th April at Brymbo FC.
