Town had half a chance as early as the first minute as goalkeeper Dylan Roberts hesitated a clearance and Phil Lloyd managed to beat him to the ball and crossed the ball in from the byline, but Steve Thomas was unable to get a shot in on goal and the ball was cleared. Thomas fired a shot over the bar a few minutes later before Llanrug’s first chance fell to Carl Griffiths who’s shot was saved well by Paul Turner after a great ball in by Kevin Lloyd.
Town’s next chance fell to Mark Orme, who’s shot went inches wide after a great cross by Sam Jones before Paul Turner was called into action again, this time saving well from Kevin Lloyd. Paul Williams was then put through on goal by a great ball by Tom McElmeel but he rounded the keeper well but his cross towards the oncoming Steve Thomas was cleared before Thomas could get a shot in on goal. Sam Jones then tried his luck from over 30 yards out but his shot went wide before Phil Lloyd came closest to scoring for Holywell when his effort was brilliantly tipped over by Roberts.
Soon after that save, Town took the lead. Matty Roberts fed a great ball through for Steve Thomas to chase and he beat his marker and ran into the box before it seemed he was tripped. He quickly got up and lay the ball off for Sam Jones from outside the box and his screamer flew into the top corner to give Roberts no chance and Town took a deserved lead into the half time break.
Town came aout for the second half and continued to press on the Llanrug goal and Lloyd saw his effort on 48 minutes cleared off the line but only as far as Dafydd Griffith, but his shot went over teh crossbar. Llanrug then had an effort punched clear by turner before Carl Griffiths had a shot go wide of Turner’s goal. A few minutes later however, the Wellmen doubled their lead. A great move saw Sam Jones break from the halfway line; he shrugged off a couple of tackles before laying the ball off nicely to Phil Lloyd whose 1st time effort flew into the net with the keeper well beaten. A few minutes later, Town had scored another. Steve Thomas’ corner kick was cleared by the Llanrug defender but only as far as Tom McElmeel, who controlled the ball before unleashing a shot which flew through a crowded area and into the goal.
Llanrug wern’t giving up though and came back at Town looking for a goal, and a minute after our 3rd, they pulled one back through David Noel Williams, as his shot beat Turner at the near post to give Llanrug a bit of a lifeline. Town looked to add to their tally and Tom McElmeel had a shot saved brilliantly once again by Roberts who was having a good game. Town soon got a 4th as Phil Lloyd broke clear down the left, and his cross to the far post was met by Sam Jones who headed home his second goal of the evening. 5 minutes later, Lloyd got his second of the night and town’s 5th. A slight error of judgement by Llanrug’s captain Eifion Williams saw the ball deflect off him, and fell to Phil Lloyd who raced clear on goal with Williams trying to catch up. Lloyd picked out his spot and his shot beat Roberts to seal the victory for Town.
Llanrug’s Marvin Pritchard then saw his shot come cross hit the cross bar and come back into play before the ball was cleared to safety. The referee blew the whistle to end the game and The Wellmen were crowned Cookson Cup Champions for 2013/14, much to the delight of the large number of supporters who had made the journey to Conwy. Town’s focus now turn to Saturday’s Mawddach Cup game against Gwalchmai before the big Welsh Cup Semi Final against Aberystwyth the following Saturday. Great win and a great night for all those involved at Holywell Town FC.
